William Shakespeare is perhaps not only England’s most famous playwright and poet but also the greatest writer in the world. He is often called as England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”. His works have been translated into every major language and are read more widely than those of other writers.

Shakespeare was born on 26th April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon where he was brought up. He married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 and with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Judith and Hamnet. At some time around 1589 he joined a theater company in London as an actor and began writing plays. Also Shakespeare became a part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later known as a King’s Men. It was renamed after the death of Queen Elisabeth in 1603 when King James I who enjoyed watching Shakespeare’s plays awarded his company of actors a royal patent. His plays were very popular and he became a very rich man. In 1597 he bought the second-largest house in Stratford, New Place as his family house. William Shakespeare is the greatest of all playwrights and poets of all times. Not much is known of his life. He was probably the son of a businessman and was born in 1564 in Stradford-upon-Avon. He probably attended the local grammar school and got a classical education. In 1582 he married Anne Hathaway and had three children. Little is known of his life before 1592, when he appeared as a playwright in London. Soon he became an actor playing supporting roles like the ghost in «Hamlet». In 1599 Shakespeare became a part owner of the Globe Theatre in London.

Shakespeare’s work as a playwright is subdivided into three periods. Written in the first period, Shakespeare’s plays are mostly history plays like «Henry VI», and comedies with strong elements of farce («The Comedy of Errors»). His masterpiece of this period is «Romeo and Juliet».

In the second period Shakespeare wrote a number of comedies where he moved away from farce towards romance («As You Like It»). In the third period, after 1600, appeared his major tragedies - «Hamlet», «Othello». They presented a clear opposition of order to chaos, goo

How it all began in Stratford-upon-Avon…  This English town is famous for the birthplace of William Shakespeare (1564—1616), one of the greatest writers in the world. He founded the Theatre in England.

It was the 16th century. When William was a young man, there were no theatres in Eng­land. Groups of actors travelled from town to town and played in different places, usually out-of-doors. Sometimes actors came to Stratford. Young Wil­liam went to see all their shows and liked them very much. He wanted to become an actor. Sometimes he wrote little plays himself and staged them with  his  friends.

William Shakespeare is often called the world's greatest playwright. He wrote comedies, tragedies and historical plays in England in the last part of the 16th and the early 17th century.

William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in the English town of Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was a businessman and the town's mayor. His mother came from a family that owned land near Stratford. William had three younger brothers and two younger sisters.

Like other boys of middle-class families, William attended a grammar school in Stratford where he got a good education and also learned Latin.

When William was 18 he married Anne Hathaway. They had three children, first Susanna and then twins, a son named Hamnet and a daughter named Judith. Hamnet died when he was 11.

We don't really know what William did during the following years but in 1592 he went to London to work as a writer and actor. It was a difficult job and only the best found work in London.
